Red Class

Topic: Winter

Communication and Interaction

Our key text is Bill Martin Jr’s book ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?’. We will be working on our listening skills and identifying the animal sounds the Snowman and Polar Bear hear in the story.  We will also notice, listen and show anticipation, using objects and photographs to answer or ask questions. We will locate objects or sounds and work on our matching skills.  We will also be sharing a range of winter stories and choosing our favourites.

Cognition and Learning

In cognition, we will be developing our problem-solving skills through exploring and looking for items in different containers and boxes. We will be learning through ball and ‘snowball’ play which is big and which is small.

We will be exploring cause and effect using a range of objects and also the computer and in other IT resources.

We will explore temperature, focusing on ‘cold’ through ice play and snow. We will be comparing temperatures, showing preferences and consistent reactions to different temperatures. We will then be finding out how we can keep warm in the cold by dressing up with hats, scarves and gloves!

Physical and Sensory

This term will see us using the swings both inside and outside. We will also be working on our ball skills by receiving and pushing different sized balls to each other. We will also play parachute games.

Our creative activities will involve exploring cold, wintery colours such as blues, whites and silver. We will be exploring textures and painting using our hands and feet to make snowflakes and winter scenes.

We will be exploring a range of dry and wet substances such as icing sugar to make patterns.

We will be working with Rosie from Darts each week in our music sessions!

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

We will be going outside for walks to explore the effect winter has on trees and consider the sounds we can hear outdoors.

We will be using mirrors to look at ourselves and learn about our face and our facial features. We will be learning to identify ourselves and some of our friends on photographs.

We will also be learning to take turns with our friends through a range of activities and learning to wait our turn.
