Curriculum Development

At Heatherwood we are on an amazing and an exciting journey to develop our curriculum. We continue to work on the implementation of a curriculum that meets the holistic needs of all the learners and their families of Heatherwood. 



Our curriculum will be based on the Care we give to all pupils, the Opportunities we facilitate, through Real life experiences and situations providing their entitlement to an Education

Our curriculum aims to enable each young person to become:

A successful learner who:

  • communicates effectively in a range of meaningful ways.
  • develops the essential learning skills of literacy, numeracy, and ICT.
  • has opportunities to be creative, resourceful and to identify and solve problems.
  • has an enquiring mind and thinks for themselves to process information, reason and evaluate.
  • learns through experiences, including their own mistakes.
  • is able to learn independently and with others.
  • knows about big ideas and events that shape their world.
  • enjoys learning and is motivated to achieve the best they can now and in the future.

A confident individual who:

  • has a sense of self-worth and personal identity.
  • responds or relates to others and forms good relationships.
  • is self-aware and deals with their emotions.
  • has established basic values and beliefs and principles to know right from wrong.
  • becomes increasingly independent, and is able to initiative some activities and organize aspects of themselves.
  • makes healthy choices.
  • is physically competent and confident (within their capabilities).
  • is supported to take managed risks and stay safe.
  • recognizes their abilities and with support works towards personal goals.
  • with support is willing to try new things and make the most of their opportunities.
  • experiences the excitement and inspiration offered by the natural world and human achievements.

A responsible citizen who:

  • is well prepared for life and leisure, and has experienced meaningful work based activities.
  • has experienced or performed meaningful enterprise activities.
  • is able to work cooperatively with others.
  • respects others and acts with integrity.
  • is aware of their own and others culture and traditions, within the context of British heritage, and have a sense of their own place in their world.
  • has experience of / or appreciates the benefits of diversity.
  • has a basic awareness of their right to be treated with fairness, and who has experienced living peaceably with others.
  • can be supported to sustain and improve their environment, locally and globally.
  • can be supported to take account of the needs of present and future generations in the choices they make.
  • can change things for the better.
  • can experience /cope with negative or positive reactions to themselves from others.
