Red Class

Spring Term

Topic: Winter and Animals

Communication and Interaction

We will be starting our term this year by reading our sensory story ‘Polar bear, Polar bear, what do you hear?’ by  Bill Martin Jr. We will be working on our listening skills to  the repetitive phrases and identifying the animal sounds from out text, as well as everyday environmental sounds.

We will be focusing on each of the animal characters in turn and exploring the different objects, photographs and symbols that support our texts. We will take part in a range of sensory walks in and around school, make choices and matching objects, photographs and symbols. We will then extend our animal knowledge when we focus on the animals we find in the jungle.

Cognition and Learning

We will be exploring and looking for items in different containers and boxes. We will investigate putting things in and taking things out of containers in a range of real-life contexts. We will also be introduced to placing things on. We will link parts our stories to our cognition sessions, such as exploring and matching colours.   We will be learning through ball and ‘snowball’ play which is big and which is small.

We will be exploring the coldness of things through ice play and snow (if it comes J). We will be finding out how we can keep warm in the cold by dressing up with hats, scarves and gloves.

Physical and Sensory

This term we will be learning and practising our ball  skills through targeting games such as skittles and bocca before rolling the ball to our friends.  We will also use the indoor swings.

Our creative activities will also be exploring cold wintery colours such as blues, whites and silver. We will be looking at animals and their colours and patterns on their bodies.

We will be exploring a range of dry and wet substances such as icing sugar to make patterns.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

We will be going outside for walks to explore the effect winter has on trees and we will experience outdoor sounds.

We will be using mirrors to look at ourselves and learn about our face and our facial features. We will be learning to identify ourselves and some of our friends on photographs.

We will be learning to take turns with our friends through a range of activities and learning to wait our turn.
