Autumn Term

Topic: Ourselves

Communication and Interaction

This term, we are learning about ourselves and our daily routines through sensory stories, including waking up, washing, and brushing our teeth. We are exploring familiar everyday sounds, such as an alarm clock, and enjoying a Bag book story about having a haircut.

We are developing our communication skills using TaSSeLs (an on-body signing system) and taking part in Intensive Interaction sessions. As we move towards Christmas, we will be exploring the story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' through a range of sensory experiences.

Cognition and Learning

This term, we are learning through a range of sensory experiences to explore and engage with the world around them using all of our senses. We will be exploring coloured lights and with a particular focus on the colours yellow, orange, red and green.

Each week, we take part in a Sensology session, where we use all of their senses in a structured and enjoyable way. These sessions help to develop communication, exploration and awareness skills, while also reinforcing the learning and sensory experiences we have been focusing on throughout the week.

Physical and Sensory

This term in our physical development sessions, we are learning about our bodies and how they move. We are experiencing activities such as swinging our arms, clapping our hands and moving our legs to develop body awareness.

We are also exploring vibration and rhythm through a range of sensory activities to feel and respond to a steady beat.

In sensory art, we are exploring colour through different materials and creative experiences. During sensory cooking sessions, we are learning about breakfast time by exploring dry cornflakes before adding milk and making toast.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

To support our wellbeing this term, we will be spending time in our sensory and wildlife gardens, listening to the sounds around us and exploring the changing seasons through a range of sensory experiences.

To help develop social skills and self-awareness, we will be exploring mirrors to look at ourselves and notice others around them.

Our daily call-and-response songs provide a way for us to come together as a group at the start and end of each day, helping to build communication, routine and a sense of belonging.
