We will also be exploring the use symbols to communicate and make links with familiar objects and areas around school. Our daily visual timetables will support the us to understand what is happening each day and what is coming next. In Autumn 2, we will explore all things Christmas, enjoying lots of festive activities, songs, stories and sensory experiences. Our focus story will be ‘The Polar Express’, where we will explore the characters, sounds and exciting journey. We will continue to build communication skills through symbols, visuals, shared stories and opportunities to express our feelings, choices and ideas.

Cognition and Learning

In our Cognition & Early Maths sessions, we will explore Bonfire Night in Autumn 1 and move into the excitement of Christmas in Autumn 2, using lots of colourful, fun and hands-on activities to support our learning. Pupils will enjoy matching and sorting objects by colour and size, as well as exploring numbers 1–3, recognising numerals and beginning to understand what each number means. Alongside this, we will gently encourage pupils to stay focused for a little longer, make choices and have a go at activities more independently, helping them to grow in confidence and feel proud of their achievements.

Physical and Sensory

This term, we will have lots of opportunities to move, explore and have fun while developing our physical and sensory skills. We will enjoy PE sessions focusing on ball skills, alongside daily sensory circuits to help pupils feel calm, regulated and ready to learn. We will also strengthen our fine motor skills through activities such as Dough Disco, while building confidence and independence through everyday life skills, including using cutlery and utensils with purpose and accuracy.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

We will continue to support pupils to develop their SEMH skills through shared experiences and opportunities to build positive relationships with others. We will encourage sharing and turn-taking with peers, while providing opportunities to explore a range of sensory activities, including those that may be less familiar or preferred. Pupils will also be encouraged to independently access sensory supports, such as balance beams, the trampoline and water play, to help them feel calm, settled and ready to learn. Alongside this, we will explore feelings and emotions together, with gentle adult support to help pupils recognise, understand and communicate how they are feeling.
