Spring Term Overview
Towards Employment
|
This term’s key texts in The Hub are The Zookeeper and More Animal Stories by Dick King-Smith as voted for by the students in class. We will be working on our listening skills and investigating the different features, habitats and diets of a variety of animals featured in the books.

Phonics sessions will see some pupils following the Read, Write, Inc scheme and others engaging in choice making activities, communicating their preferences and matching objects to photographs, symbols and sounds around school and linked to our Amazing Animals topic. Pupils’ will continue to develop their numeracy knowledge and understanding by using a variety of methods such as Numicon, pictorial representation and real-life scenarios to further develop their skills. Reading will consist of 1:1 reading sessions with staff, whole class stories and Sensory Stories in the library.

Independent living
|
We will be continuing to developing our independence skills by preparing simple snacks and drinks, following recipes that focus on measuring and weighing. We will be choosing and using the correct utensil, implements and ingredients where appropriate and incorporate Maths and Communication skills into the sessions. We will be exploring ingredients and a variety of foods using all of our senses.

We will be applying our switch skills to activate everyday items, such as whisks and blenders.
|
Community Inclusion
|
This term we will accessing the community and visiting local cafes and shops. These visits will be on a rota so each pupils has the opportunity to access them.
We will be spending time in the wider community, such as sensory and wildlife garden. Developing our understanding of our extended community.

We will also be accessing other areas around the school environment, such as swimming and rebound to develop our physical skills and will be taking part in activities which help develop our understanding and recognition of places around us.
Health
|
|
We will continue to promote personal hygiene, what we need to do to stay clean and healthy including daily routines. We will be looking at healthy habits and good practice when preparing and handling food.
The Hub pupils will be participating in Body Awareness sessions in PE and in PSHE, using the drama circle to understand how our peers and adults feel in certain scenarios.

Extended and Enriched
|
In creative/art sessions, students will create animal pictures using sensory materials. Music sessions will consist of pupils using Chrome music lab to create sound effects linked to animals by engaging in touch screen activities.
Simon will spend Wednesday afternoons in The Hub this term providing Sensory music sessions for the students.

Careers
Through a variety of activities, including work experience and visits, we will be discovering more about people who work in catering. We will be working as a team and independently to improve our cooking and gardening skills.
