Spring Term

Topic: Superheroes!

Communication and Interaction

This term, we’re setting off on a storytelling adventure with our wonderful key text Supertato and Superworm!. Each week, pupils will uncover new parts of the story through hands-on, Pre-Phonics activities such as sensory bins and tuff trays—bringing the books to life! Building on their prior learning, pupils will continue to develop their listening skills by spotting key moments in the stories and reacting to what happens next. Curiosity and anticipation will build as pupils are encouraged to explore, predict, and engage during both supported and independent learning sessions. Pupils will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share their ideas, supporting their confidence and understanding. We will continue to build communication skills through a range of methods, including Objects of Reference, Makaton, and Symbols. We will enjoy lots of familiar rhymes and dive into fun musical activities to develop our understanding of transport. It’s going to be a term full of imagination, exploration, and storytelling magic!

Cognition and Learning

This term in our Cognition sessions, pupils will be actively encouraged to participate in problem‑solving as they post, place, and explore objects. Building on their prior learning, pupils will continue to explore the concepts of big and small, beginning to notice and distinguish differences in size through hands‑on play. Pupils will further develop their understanding of positional language, exploring when an object has placed on, under or to the side, through motivating games and activities. Pupils will investigate cause and effect using a range of objects, as well as computers and other IT resources—pressing, clicking, and discovering what happens next! Patterns and repetition will be explored through playful activities such as construction and 2D shape play, encouraging creativity and curiosity. Pupils will begin to explore early number and amounts using both pictorial and concrete resources, helping them make sense of numbers in a fun, meaningful way.

Physical and Sensory

In our Physical and Sensory development sessions, pupils will jump into a variety of exciting carousel activities during PE, all designed to support teamwork, turn‑taking, and building positive relationships. Through playful games, pupils will continue to build on their prior learning as they practise throwing, rolling, and kicking balls to friends and familiar adults. Pupils will be supported to develop their fine motor skills through hands‑on activities such as posting, threading, and stacking, helping to build strength and coordination in a fun, engaging way. Gross motor skills will continue to flourish during energetic sessions including Soft Play, Shabang, and calming Sensory Walks, giving pupils plenty of opportunities to move, explore, and challenge themselves. In our arts sessions, creativity will be in full swing! Pupils will create their very own school buses, explore transport‑themed artwork through messy play, bake traffic light biscuits, and immerse themselves in busy transport atmospheric music.  Pupils will explore different environments using a variety of sensory and colourful materials, sparking imagination and curiosity. We’re also excited to be working with Simon during our music sessions every Wednesday, where pupils can enjoy rhythm, movement, and sound together.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

As part of our Social and Emotional development, pupils will enjoy heading outdoors on nature walks to explore the exciting changes of Autumn to Winter. Time spent outside will spark curiosity and help pupils build a growing awareness of the world around them. Pupils will regularly explore mirrors as they continue developing their understanding of themselves, noticing their faces and facial features with growing confidence. Looking at photographs of themselves and familiar activities will help reinforce pupils understanding of facial recognition. Pupils will continue to identify their friends during peer-based learning—celebrating friendships within our classroom community. Through fun, shared activities, pupils will continue to develop their understanding of turn‑taking and learn how to wait patiently for their turn, building important social skills. Pupils will also be supported to develop self‑regulation, enjoying quiet time in our cosy classroom reading corner or relaxing in the sensory pod, exploring calming sensory lights and objects. Thus, supporting pupils to feel safe, settled, and ready to learn, supporting their emotional wellbeing in a nurturing and playful way.
