Physical Curriculum
Aquatics
Pupils have the amazing opportunity to access a swimming pool as part of their education at Heatherwood. All aquatics sessions have dedicated one-to-one support, tailoring the pool experience to meet individual’s needs. Pupils are supported to swim as independently as possible using water aids such as a pool woggle or ball mat. These sessions are designed to work on physical mobility, support mental health and wellbeing, and support the development of communication skills. Aquatics is certainly a favourite for many of our young people!
Rebound
For pupils whom it is appropriate, Rebound therapy is offered as part of the curriculum at Heatherwood. During Rebound sessions, a trampoline is used to facilitate movement and develop core strength, allowing participants to engage in bounce, momentum, and rhythm in a gravity-free environment. Pupils are supported on a 1:1 basis on the trampoline and encouraged throughout to guide their own learning and experiences. Rebound programmes are written on a bespoke basis by trained Rebound practitioners and are regularly reviewed.
MOVE
For those pupils whom it is appropriate, MOVE is used across school to develop independent movement skills in preparation for adulthood. Pupils will engage in a short term MOVE intervention with specific goals and targets to support them to develop skills supporting their independence. This is completed on a bespoke basis and carried out by staff who know the young people well, overseen by our physiotherapists and MOVE practitioners.
