Usually the ducklings which hatch would be returned to the Incredible Eggs Farm, but on this occasion our ducklings have been adopted by a member of staff from Heatherwood. We are sure the ducklings will enjoy their new home.

The second duckling has been named Shell-by (from Beaky Blinders) because of the black patch on his head which resembles a newsboy style cap.

There has still been no movement from the other three eggs in the incubator.

The saplings were planted as part of Doncaster Council's Children's Future Forest project which will see 366 trees (one for each day of the leap year) established across sites around the city. The saplings were donated by The Tree Council and Defra's Trees Outside Woodland Fund.

The children smiled and gently reached out to touch the ducklings.

On Monday, 16th March five eggs were delivered to Heatherwood and kept warm in an incubator. The providers, Incredible Eggs, advised us that the eggs should hatch by Wednesday. 

However, we had an early arrival on Tuesday morning as one of the eggs hatched. The duckling was named Count Duckula. He can be recognised by his black back, black legs and black beak. By the end of the school day, a second duckling emerged from its shell. This one can be recognised by his dark back, black patch on top of its head, pink legs and pink beak.

]]> Mon, 15 Dec 2025 14:22:58 GMT https://www.heatherwoodschool.org/news/?pid=7&nid=1&storyid=71 <![CDATA[ Travel Training with a Tinsel Twist! ]]> https://www.heatherwoodschool.org/news/?pid=7&nid=1&storyid=70 Each week, students from the Key class practise their travel training skills as part of the Preparing for Adulthood curriculum. This week, travel training took on a Christmas twist.  Students travelled by bus and then a train to Meadowhall. Whilst there, they practised using money, identifying directional signs and learnt how to stay safe in the shopping centre.

Of course, students took the opportunity to view the wonderful Christmas displays at Meadowhall and some even purchased a present for their Secret Santa!

There were more opportunities for the Key to use their money skills at The Bridge's Christmas Fayre on 5th December. Students held a stall selling Christmas cards and wreaths which they had made by themselves.

Pupils helped to decorate their classrooms and have started to make Christmas arts and crafts. The school also had a special visit this week by youth leaders of The Resurrection Church. 

Blue class represented Heatherwood at The Doncaster Lions Christmas Party and had a fantastic time. Several other classes have been on visits to Walker's Garden Centre and The Range to look at the beautiful Christmas decorations.

Parents and carers were invited to join pupils in a range of autumn themed activities, including arts, crafts and messy play. The pumpkin patch photo booth was perfect for capturing lots of special memories.

Pupils also created their own happy emojis, enjoyed spending time with their friends and attended a celebratory assembly.

The pupils also took the opportunity to design their own jeans! Thank you to everyone who donated and helped us raise £60 for the charity.
