Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression. We at Heatherwood believe that Makaton is powerful tool that can unlock communication for some students and therefore advocate its use in school.
We have a range of resources that you may find helpful linking to core vocabulary, school topics or just for fun.
Summer Term: Seaside
Our classes are learning about the sea or seaside in different ways but here are some key vocabulary for this topic that may help at home. There are also some symbols that could be printable too.

REACH FOR THE STARS
Here is our Makaton video that we recorded in school, we have loved singing and signing the song as part of our Comic Relief celebrations. We hope you like it. There are some tutorial videos of how to sign the chorus and the supporting line drawings for the key vocabulary too. Have fun.
Here is a demo video that you might want to watch that shows the signs for the first part of the song and a pdf document showing the Makaton signs that you will need to sing along.
To work along side the Remote Learning Offer that we have in school and at home, teachers have planned some work around stories. We will be trying to demonstrate the Makaton signs that you can use when sharing these stories or topic words. We will return to the words of the week soon. Please contact us if you need further explanation of the signs.
