Heatherwood 6th Form has recently undergone significant change.  As a result of decisions to expand post 16 opportunities within the local authority, Heatherwood was asked to facilitate a new provision that would meet the needs of pupils presenting with moderate learning difficulties; this would run alongside any existing provision at the school.

6th Form

Heatherwood’s existing 6th Form provision has remained unchanged, with students completing a highly personalised offer. However the original provision has been expanded, giving pupils the opportunity to learn in ways best suited to their individual learning style.

Learning is delivered using a variety of enrichment activities and accredited curriculum units; these, where possible, are all linked to real-life and independent living skills.  Pupils’ work is accredited using ASDAN and Equals with their learning based on units from these two recognised bodies and assessed at the end of each year..

The Key

The new 6th Form provision has been aptly named ‘The Key’. This is because we see it as a progressive stepping stone designed to support pupils in unlocking their futures and achieving their full potential.  From September 2019 we will have 11 pupils in The Key: six in Year 12 and five in Year 13.

The learning environment has been carefully thought out to create a more mature feel therefore helping pupils make that important transition between formal schooling and 6th Form. As before, the offer is highly personalised and seeks to develop personal independence in preparation for the world of work. Activities are undertaken both in school and the surrounding local community and are specifically designed to promote essential life and employability skills.

The Prince’s Trust ‘Achieve’ program forms part of the pupil’s learning and accreditation.  This unique program is widely accepted as a benchmark in post 16 educations and is designed to foster confidence and independence as pupils near entry into the world of business and work.

The pupils work towards Entry Level in both English and Maths with the learning, wherever possible, undertaken in a variety of real-life settings. It is hoped that pupils are able to take the knowledge, skills and experience that they gain in school and apply it in a wider context.

The Building Work.

Part of school has been redeveloped to accommodate the new 6th form provision. Here are some photos of the work as it is was being done.
